Ngauruhoe Erupts
(N.Z. Frees Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. Mount Ngauruhoe erupted violently about 4 p.m. today and ash and smoke penetrated the cloud which covered the mountain. The chief ranger at the Tongariro National Park (Mr J. W. Mazey) said the eruption was much more violent than that on Sunday. “The ash went up as high as 12,000 feet. It was quite spectacular,” Mr Mazey said. The eruption lasted 15 to 20 minutes. The mountain was still smoking before dark, he said. Mr Mazey said that some hours before Ngauruhoe eruted, seismological equipment had shown a drop in Mt Ruapehu’s activity.
