New Purchase Wins Steeples
(N.Z Press Atsn—Copyright} MELBOURNE. Scolvin, a seven-year-old New Zealand-bred jumper which was sold to American Interests on Friday night, scored his first win for his new owners when he won the Australian Steeplechase (about 3m If) at Sandown Park on Saturday.
Scolvin (Golovine—Scalzo) led all the way and hung on gamely in a punishing finish to hold off Castelano by a length and a quarter. Junction Lass was six lengths away third. Scolvin changed hands after the trainer, 1. McKinley, had been asked to buy the best up-and-coming steeplechaser in Victoria for an English firm of bloodstock agents. He was told the horse would do his future racing in America, mostly In Maryland, where jumping races are popular. Scolvin is expected to leave for America at the end of the month.
