Both are devoted exclusively to research and doctoral training, and for both an interest in modern quantitative and systematic approaches would be desirable. Regional Interests are in Australia, New Guinea, the Pacific Islands, and increasingly SouthEast Asia. Supporting staff, laboratories, cartographic facilities, and equipment (including vehicles) are adequate, and field work allowances are liberal. The Department of Human Geography (Acting Head, Dr H. C. Brookfield) is concerned with social and cultural geography, with emphasis on the agrarian life of the tropics north of Australia; and with transport, industrial, and urban geography, so far mainly in Australia. These interests are not, however, exclusive. The Department of Biogeography and Geomorphology (Acting Head, Dr D. Walker) has a strong emphasis on coastal, perigracial, tropical, and karst morphology, and on palynology and plant ecology. A small high-altitude field station is maintained on Mount Wilhelm, New Guinea. The normal salary for each post will be $A13,000 per annum. Superannuation is on F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits. Reasonable appointment and travel expenses will be paid for successful applicants and their families, and assistance with housing is provided. A Professor is entitled to 12 months study leave on full salary, with up to $A3200 towards expenses, In every four years of service.
