Soviet Arms To Pakistan
(N.Z.F.A.-Reuter —Copuripht) NEW DELHI, July 12. India has had Indications that Russia may ship some arms to Pakistan, according to the Indian Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi). Mrs Gandhi, who has already said that such a Soviet move would be “fraught with danger,” told reporters on her return from a visit to the flood-stricken State of Assam yesterday that she did not know what items were involved, but they could not be regarded merely as a token supply. The Indian President (Mr Zakir Husain) and senior officials accompanying him on a State visit to the Soviet Union are understood to be raising the reported deal with Russian leaders. Karachi reports say Pakistani officials are remaining silent on the outcome of the reported arms-seeking mission to Moscow last week by the Army Chief of Staff (General Mohammed Yahya Khan). The general was sent to Moscow after Pakistani protests that Russia was upsetting the balance of power in the sub-continent by its arms shipments to India. Until now Russia has sent only a trickle of non-lethal equipment to Pakistan, but informed sources in Karachi have Indicated there is a new Soviet willingness to be more generous.
