Conditions For Grant To Little River Hall Fund
Little River s proposed hall was discussed by the Wairewa County Council yesterday after a letter had been received from the Golden Kiwi lottery board of control. The letter, which was in reply to a letter from the council asking for a grant for the hall, said that when the council had collected 80 per cent of the cost of the hall it could apply for a lottery grant, and the application would then be considered. The council already had $lO,OOO and would need to raise a further $7160 to reach the 80 per cent, said the chairman (Mr W. S. C. Mcßae). The situation outlined in the letter might call for another public meeting, Mr McRae said.
There was a definite need for the hall and the recreational facilities it could provide. At present there was very little recreation for young people in the area.
Cr J. N. Buckland said that some ratepayers did not favour a proposal to levy a rate to provide funds for the hall because properties with high capital values would pay a disproportionate contribution. The owners of the small properties closer to the hall would pay much less but would have much more opportunity to make use of the halL It was decided that the chairman, the county clerk (Mr W. F. Aydon) and Cr P. N. Ussher should study the minutes of the previous public meeting on the hall and take any necessary action.
