COALMINERS TRAPPED
f N ZPA -Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, May 13.
A rescue party was today fighting a raging fire in a pit at the Bibai coalmine in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, in an effort to save the lives of 13 miners trapped inside.
The police say 31 miners were inside the pit for a routine safety check when a cave-in occurred yesterday and fire broke out immediately. Eighteen of the miners managed to crawl out of the smoke-filled pit and six are being treated in hospital. It was the second major accident at the mine this year —a gas explosion on January 20 killed 16 miners.
