N.Z. RIDER’S SUCCESS
Leading World Championship
The experienced New Zealand motor-cycle road racer, W. (Ginger) Molloy, at present leads the world 250 c.c. road racing championship.
He is the first New Zealand motor-cyclist to lead a world championship series since the former 50 c.c. and 125 c.c. title-holder, H. R. Anderson (Ohinewai), retired two years ago.
Molloy, a works rider for the Spanish Bultaco factory, took over the lead in the series when he finished third in the recent Snanish 250 c.c Grand Prix at Barcelona. He now has 10 points, two ahead of the English Yamaha works riders, P. W. Read and W. Ivy. His first points came in the opening round of the championship at Nurburgring, West Germany, when he finished second to Ivy. Molloy is also highly placed in the 125 c.c. class. His fine second place in the Spanish 125 c.c. Grand Prix gave him six points, only two points behind the joint leaders, Read and fellow Bultaco rider, S. Canellas (Spain). He is not out of the running in the 350 c.c. class either. He has three points towards this world championship and
at Barcelona narowly missed scoring his first championship points in the 500 c.c. world championship. In this he was riding the newly developed air-cooled 350 c.c. works Bultaco twostroke, a machine which is still having teething troubles. In the 103-mile senior Spanish Grand Prix Molloy was seriously challenging A. Bergamonti (Hannah-Paton) for third place when he was forced to retire. The. race was won by the reigning world champion, G. Agostini (Italy), on an M.V.-Augusta.
