Rebels, Brighton Win Indoor Basketball

Rebels and Brighton scored good wins in the women's A grade indoor basketball competition in Cowles Stadium last evening.

Rebels beat University A, 21-14, and Brighton defeated Rangiora. 22-18. The third A grade match of the round, between the competition leader, Checkers, and Rex will be played tomorrow evening.

RBRRLS 21: P. Henshilwood 6, P. Ruwhiu 4, S. le Strange 3, K. Woodgate 2, C. Brown 2, fingernail penalty 4.

UNIVERSITY A 14: J. Readman 6, K Steele 6, B. Davies 2. From the start Rebels played the game at a slow but very controlled pace. Their University opponents showed plenty of individual ability but their team-work generally broke down before a basket was made.

University had greater opportunities to score but it wasted many of them with hasty shots. Rebels were more methodical in their approach. At half-time they led 9-5 and, although the students tried desperately hard in the second spell, continued to forge slowly ahead. P. Ruwhiu was most impressive for Rebels. She handled well, fed expertly from midcourt but spelled an otherwise very sound performance with her shooting. Her long shots were far too shallow and most of them missed. S. le Strange also had a good game in the centre.

D. Broughton showed plenty of ability in the University side. She moved very well and should become a serious force in future games if she does not try to rush things. J. Readman was another who played well. BRIGHTON 37: M. Ramsay 10, B. Ross 6, H. Hutton 6, C.

Brown B, j. AncaH A. Smith 1, fingernail penalty RANGIORA IB: J. Digby 6, L.

Rollinson 5. C. Reuben 4. J. Quinn 3.

After a brief settling-down period, Brighton soon began to dominate play. Its team-work was far superior and with some good shooting from close in rapidly forged ahead. In the second spell its pace slackened off slightly, but Rangiora never looked like getting the upper hand. H. Hutton played an excellent game in the centre for Brighton and combined well with the former Now Zealand player, B. Ross, and M. Ramsay. Ramsay was perhaps the most effective player on the court, although her defence let her down at times. She rebounded well and her shooting was better than most. Although suffering from an ankle injury, C. Reuben was still Rangiora’s best attacking player. J. Digby and L. Rollinson played good supporting roles.
