Linwood Shows Old Form

LINWOOD IT: K. Glmblett and B. Cocks tries; N. 3. Stokes two dropped goals, P. Jellyman a penalty and a conversion. UNIVERSITY A 0. Giving its best and most confident display ot the season. Unwood showed It still may be a threat for championship honours by defeating University most decisively. For the flrat is minutes University played some splendid Rugby. The forwards, led by P. D. Dunean and M Hamilton, charged through in the loose and the three-quarters looked most dangerous on attack. But it was short-live-. Once Linwood assembled its defences and settled down to plav sound, but enterprising Rugby, University did not threaten again. The Unwood forwards, although not matching University in the line-outs, were far more effective as a unit in the loose and covered and backed up remarkably well. N. J. Stokes made a considerable difference to the Linwood team. His dropped goal early tn the match gave Linwood some confidence; his sound handling, ability to steady play with astute kicking. and his quick passing allowed the Unwood backs to finally blossom.

Glmblett had bis best game this season and the three-quart-ers. R. Cocks and R. J. Woolhouse. made some dangerous thrusts down the side-line. The absence of the captain, A. M. Holland and W. T. McCormick, did not noticeably hamper Linwood. T. Norton, the new hooker took two tight heads from J. N. Creighton and was useful tn the loose. I. Mallard. R. Eastmond and J. Storey were a splendid trio of loose forwards and effectively blunted attempts to attack by the University backs. Dunean had a fine game for University but too often he lacked support once he had breached the first line of de-

fence. Hamilton was a very fast loose forward and Garlick a good jumper in the line-outs. The University backs suffered from slow passing by their halfback combination, but the outside backs showed up tn Individual sorties. H. J. Joseph looked a second five-eighths of uncommon promise and A. Boyle was a very strong running centre who exposed some deficiencies in Jelfyman's tackling. It was a bright and enjoyable game and both teams deserved full credit for their willingness to pass the ball. Referee: Mr G. J. Bolton.
