Lincoln Stays At Top After Day Of Upsets
Lincoln College is the only team to have won all four games after the fourth round of the senior Rugby competition on Saturday. Reputation and form proved as substantial as the autumn leaves as Shirley and New Brighton lost their matches and other sides suffered heavy defeats by less favoured teams.
Linwood returned to its 1967 form with an impressive 17-0 defeat of University A, but the most surprising results were when Marist beat the hitherto undefeated Shirley side 12-9; Old Boys won their first game by beating Suburbs, University B narrowly beat the strong New Brighton team, and Sydenham easily defeated Albion.
Lincoln College was not very impressive in beating MerivalePapanui 5-3 to keep its unbeaten record and Christchurch made heavy weather of its game against Belfast Sydenham outplayed Albion 20-3 and M. Pepper, who dropped two goals last week, scored another three on Saturday. Generally clubs provided bright Rugby but it was unfortunate that again there were unseemly incidents in one match. The referee bad to warn players in the ShirleyMarist game for rough play and fighting.
Results were:— Linwood 17, University A 0. Marist 12, Shirley 9. University B 6, New Brighton 3. Lincoln College 5, MerivalePapanul 3. Old Boys 15, Suburbs 14. Christchurch 13, Belfast 5. Sydenham 20, Albion 6.
