NAME OF FRIGATE

Canterbury Chosen (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 22. The Navy’s fourth anti-sub-marine frigate will be named H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury when the vessel is launched from a British shipyard. Announcing this today, the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) said tenders were now being called for the Leander class frigate, which will be similar to H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato. Mr Thomson said the name Canterbury had been chosen by the Naval Board after careful consideration had been given to 17 other names suggested by local authorities from all over New Zealand. He said the help of the people of Canterbury province would probably be sought when the time came to design a badge for the new warship.
