Plans For Trading Census This Year
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 22. New Zealand’s fourth census of distribution—covering wholesale and retail trading activities during the 12 months ending March 31 this year—will be held soon.
This was announced today by the Minister in charge of the Department of Statistics (Mr Muldoon). Mr Muldoon said surveys of domestic trade had been a regular feature of statistical activity for some time in all the more economically advanced countries. In New Zealand censuses of this nature were taken in 1953, 1958, and 1963. “In addition to providing the business community and Government with comprehensive statistics on this important sector of the economy,” said the Minister, “the census
provides the only means of checking whether the quarterly surveys of retail trade are still representative and accurate.
“Apart from the value of the census itself, these continuing surveys based on the census form one of the most important economic indicators to guide Government policy,” he said. “They measure a major portion of consumer expenditure which is such an important influence on the general level of economic activity.” This year’s census will be conducted by post.
