Red Chips Improves Sound Record
Red Chips again showed his genuine qualities in winning the Amuri Handicap, second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double yesterday.
Red Chips recorded his eleventh win for the partnership of Messrs J. A. Randle and C. McDonald In a little over a year with yesterday’s success.
He completed a $63 T.A.B. double with General Gilbert, and compensated his regular backers for his close second to Billy Joe in the Craven Plate on Monday. Helped by a 51b allowance with G. R. Gullery up, Red Chips sped over the six furlongs in Imin lOsec in beating the Reefton sprinter,
Debbie Marie, by half a length. Red Chips and Azir were disputing tile lead with BiUy Joe leaving the chute in the run to the course proper. Billy Joe faltered some distance beyond the furlong and Red Chips struggled to a short lead from Debbie Marie, which bad been always close to the pace. Red Chips lasted with characteristic gameness for a half-length victory. Azir was a length back third, just ahead of Tumble, which made rapid progress through the pack late in the race for fourth. Lady Fort made some ground on the outside near the furlong but could not go through with her run and had to settle for fiflth half a length ahead of Danny Kaye. Billy Joe dropped out to seventh after striking himself.
