Ashley-Kowai Amalgamation
Sir, —I must answer “Honesty” and “Fair Play.” This business commenced at a meeting called by a ratepayer, not by the ratepayers’ association, and is a legal and democratic right. It would be a sad day if these rights were lost and the result—dictator-ship-installed. It was deplorable that the only man in an official position who attended the meeting was Cr Lewis who had to bear the brunt of all the que/icns. Supporting democracy to the hilt, I have therefore signed the petition on these grounds alone. Anonymous telephone calls and letters strike at the very roots of our way of life We are supposed to be country neighbours and it is a pi‘y that the letter writers to your paper did not have the intestinal fortitude to sign their names to them.—Yours, etc., W. A. GRENFELL, Secretary, South Riding Ratepayers’ Association. January 25, 1968. Sir, —It is evident that- “ Honesty” has either forgotten, or did not read, the petition concerning the amalgamation of the Ashley and Kowai Counties. No-one has been asked to sign “opposr " the amalgamation as this would have been contrary to the wording of the petition which was headed as follows: “We, the undersigned electors of the Kowai County, desire a poll to decide the amalgamation of this county with the County of Ashley.”—Yours, R. W. WATERS. January 24, 1968.
