Contraband In Yachts
(N.Z. press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. A fear of contraband reaching this country in New Zealand yachts has prompted the Controller of Customs in Auckland (Mr M. J. O'Connor) to issue a warning to yacht clubs. He reminds owners that a certificate of clearance was needed before going overseas, and failure to get one made them liable to a fine of up to $lOOO. Mr O’Connor said today that Customs had reason to believe that contraband was coming in from Norfolk Island. There had been a few cases, he said, where yachts left New Zealand without Customs clearances and returned to places that were not ports of entry. He believed that some yachts leaving without clearance did so through ignorance. The Customs was informed by Norfolk Island authorities of New Zealand yachts returning home.
