Ten Rescued In Stormy Seas
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 3, Ten persons were hauled to safety from strong rips and stormy seas at Karekare Beach, O’Neill’s Beach and Waipu Cove, Auckland, today.
Twenty members of the Karekare Surf Life-saving Club battled . against huge seas for about an hour to rescue three youths on inflated tyres who had been carried 400 yards out to sea by a strong rip. A lone member of the .Bethell’s Beach Surf Lifesaving Club saved a girl Who had been swept 150 yards off O’Neill’s Beach, and there were several rescues in the space of an hour by the Waipu Cove Surf Life-saving Club. A middle-aged man out of his depth 50 yards off shore was brought in safely, and three-quarters of an hour later three boys who had swum out of their depth and could not get back to shore were rescued, one of them on a surfboard. A quarter of an hour later, two girls, Annette Foy and Christine Stevens, were caught out of their depth and a rescue line was used to haul them ashore.
