Riccarton-Ilam Crossing

Sir,—The recent accident to a child on the Riccarton Road pedestrian crossing near the Ham Road intersection has refocused attention on this chronic menace to young children. The crossing has been supervised for the last three years by a voluntary group of Ham School mothers, but because they have no authority or legal status, and because the traffic authorities have shown little active interest in the crossing, the scheme works with only moderate success, especially since the recent change in the law on pedestrian crossings. Flagrant violations of the crossing occur frequently but no prosecutions have so far eventuated. If the Transport Department does not want to change any more laws, it should enforce those it already has. Three solutions present themselves: regular and active supervision by a traffic officer; the more costly alternatives of installing traffic lights; or adult wardens, as used overseas.— Yours, etc., ILAM PARENT.
