LA WRY INJURED
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The Australian opening batsman, W. M. Lawry, is injured and is unlikely to play for Victoria against New Zealand in the game starting on November 24.
Lawry has a broken bone in a foot and could be idle for up to three weeks. He was hurt when the first ball from the Carlton fastbowler, P. Howell, landed on his right foot during a district game on Tuesday. But Lawry will attend a meeting on Saturday night as a selector to help choose the team to play New Zealand. Writing in the Melbourne “Herald,” Graham Eccles says a test cricketer may have to carry the drinks in Victoria’s match against New Zealand. The selectors, he adds, will face a harrowing time. “They will have 13 top players with big reputations to choose from—the 12 who travelled to Perth for the Sheffield shield match, and Paul Sheahan. who toured New Zealand last year. They must discard one and make another twelth man. “Sheahan could not play in Perth because of his studies, but his 137 not out for University on Saturday reminded the selectors that he was ready for big cricket again.
“Two days ago, it seemed certain that Les Joslin, twelth man for the first two matches, would be dropped. 1 feel this will still happen, but Joslin’s inspiring 98 not out in two hours on Wednesday could cause the selectors to think again. “If they intend to be ruthless he could be given a chance at the expense of lan Redpath, Bob Cowper, Jack Potter or Bob Bitmead," Eccles said.
