yet both of these are of generous width and without uncontrolled intersections. Most accidents within the city occur at uncontrolled intersections and so it seems unlikely that these two roads are as dangerous as the presence of the “radar” would have us believe. I am prompted to writ? this after observing a microwave patrol sited on the double-lane Main North Road between the Styx Bridge and Cranford Street on Monday evening. Why was it not sited in Papanui Road, where conditions were much more hazardous?—Yours, etc., T. M. MALING. October 25, 1967 [The district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) replies'. “Some of the roads mentioned are patrolled by the Government Transport Department and others by the Christchurch City Council’s traffic department. Neither of these organisations has sufficient radars to be in all the danger spots at the same time. Your correspondent may be of the opinion that radar is not needed in some of the streets mentioned, but this is not the view of many of the residents who complain frequently to the enforcement authorities about speeds on those streets.”]
