Light Fingers Retired

AUCKLAND.
The champion New Zealand-bred mare, Light Fingers, has been retired from racing in Australia and will be returned to her owner, Mr V. F. Dawson, of Te Awamutu.
Light Fingers, winner of the 1965 Melbourne Cup and second to Galilee in the big race last year, pulled up lame at her last three starts and her Ade laide trainer. J. B. Cummings sa<d yesterday she was now hopeless as a racing proposi tion." Mrs Dawson, wife of the mare s owner, said last night that her husband hoped to have Light Fingers home as soon as possible. "When her retirement was an nounced recently. Cummings told us we would have her back by Christmas," said Mrs Dawson "Naturally, we are delighted to hear of the retirement as it would have been a shame to risk a breakdown." Mrs Dawson said that Light
Fingers would be spelled for about six months and was then likely to be mated with Agri cola, which stands at the Te Parae Stud, Masterton. r If everything went to plan, she would be sent to Alcimedes. at the Trelawney Stud, Cambridge, the next season. Light Fingers, a six year-old bv Le Filou from Cuddlesome. was raced in Australia on lease by Mr W.. J. Broderick, a com mitteeman of the Victoria Racing Club. Melbourne. She started 23 times for 15 wins, eight seconds and five thirds, for 5A109.470 in stakes She is fourth on the list of stakewinners racing in Aus tralia and only Wenona Girl, with 5A141.650, is ahead of her among mares on the all-time list.
