PICKETING OF FILM
Demand By Negroes
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright; NEW YORK, Oct 12.
Negroes picketed the opening night of a wide-screen version of “Gone With The Wind” in New York to demand that a coloured actress be given equal billing with; the main stars.
The four pickets, wearing white Ku Klux Klan robes, were also protesting against the depiction of Negroes in a demeaning role in the film of the Deep South during the Civil War.
The leader of the pickets is the Rev. A. Kendall Smith, chairman of the Harlem Citizens for Community Action. He said that unless the Negro actress Hattie McDaniels, who plays Scarlet O’Hara’s nanny, received equal billing with the main stars, the film would be picketed every day of its run. The gala premiere on Broadway marked the film’s seventh release in the 28 years since it was made in 1939.
