REPLY TO GOVT
Papandreou Not Going fNZ Press Assn.—Copyrights ATHENS, Oct 11. The former Greek Prime Minister, Mr George Papandreou, released from house arrest two days ago, last night coolly turned down a Government offer to let him leave the country.
‘The Government’s interest about Mr Papandreou's health is moving,” sources close to him said in a prepared statement telephoned to reporters. “But his health is fine and be does not intend to ask to leave for abroad.” A Government spokesman, responding to a suggestion in a newspaper, said earlier yesterday there was no objection to Mr Papandreou leaving the country for medical treatment “If he requests an exitpermit the Government will grant it,” the spokesman said. The announcement circulated by Mr Papandreou’s friends said the 79-year-old statesman did not consider leaving. “All this was created by the pro-Government newspaper and by the Government itself," the statement said. “The paper asked and the Government answered.”
