CANBERRA, October 11.
The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Eisaku Sato, arrived in Canberra tonight for a four-day official visit to Australia and was met by drizzling rain and cold winds.
Mr Sato and his wife were greeted by l the Prime Minister, Mr Harold Holt, and Mrs Holt as they stepped from the plane which had brought them from Djakarta.
In a joint communique issued in Djakarta, Mr Sato
and Indonesia’s Acting President, General Suharto, agreed to co-operate closely to help bring peace to Asia and said they hoped for a speedy settlement of the Vietnam conflict
The two leaders agreed to foster regional co-operation efforts on a mutually complementary basis as the stability and prosperity of SouthEast Asia was an essential prerequisite for world peace. Japan pledged to continue its aid to Indonesia and paid tribute to the efforts of General Suharto’s government to restore stability to Indonesia’s economy. Mr Sato will also visit Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney, during which time he will have talks with Mr Holt, and senior ministers. He will then visit New Zealand. But the scheduled discus-
sions are brief—ls minutes in the case of Mr Holt—and observers believe they will restrict themselves to generalities.
Business As Usual.—Although 96 local Qantas employees at Nandi Airport went on strike at midnight last night, the work of the airport went on as usual, with all trans-Pacific flights arriving and leaving on time.— Suva, October 11.
