Firemen Check Big Spillage Of Acid
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 3.
About 150 gallons of sulphuric acid leaked from a tank today—but prompt action by firemen rendered it harmless.
Staff of the Rokflre Battery Company, Ltd., first noticed the leak in a 450-gal-lon steel acid tank at 8.50 a.m.
Within minutes eight firemen were at the scene, pumping hundreds of gallons of water a minute on to the spillage as it flowed out on to the footpath, into the gutter and down a drain.
Clamps applied to the tank reduced the flow considerably. The manager of the firm, Mr R. Cadness, said: “By the time the acid reached the gutter it was so diluted with the water that it didn't matter. I actually tasted it—it was like lemon drink.” Firemen hosing the acid wore breathing apparatus.
Water was pumped on to the leaking acid for six hours and then the remaining 300 gallons in the tank were pumped into an acid tanker.
