Second Defeat In Two Days

ARMIDALE.

Two tries in the last three minutes enabled Northern New South Wales to inflict the second defeat in successive days on the touring New Zealand Rugby League team.

New Zealand was beaten, 23-17, at Armidale yesterday. The Kiwis had earlier pulled up from an eight-point deficiency to lead 12-11 at half-time. A fine try by G. M. Smith after a magnificent swerving run up the touchline by L. B. Mills mid-way through the second half ap-

peared to make the game safe for the Kiwis at 17-13. But defensive lapses set in and D. Shearer and B. Norton scored in the last three minutes.

W. Bischoff (2), Shearer, T. Barnes and Norton scored tries for Northern New South Wales. Shearer kicked three goals and D. Mount succeeded with a field goal. For New Zealand, G. S. Brown, Smith and Mills scored tries, J. D. Ellwood kicked four goals from five attempts. Possession and penalties were evenly divided, with L. S. Morgan winning 13 of the 25 scrums, and the Kiwis receiving a slight 12-11 penalty advantage. The New Zealand defence was poor and the Northern New South Wales backs made ground from set and loose Play.
