SWIMMING TITLES

New World Event (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. If plans eventuate, the first world swimming championships outside an Olympic Gaines will be held in 1978.

Mr M. Kiyokawa, secretary of F.1.N.A., the controlling body of world swimming, spoke about these plans when he was in Auckland at the week-end on business.

There will be a meeting of the 96 affiliated countries at Mexico City next year during the Olympic Games, and a decision will most probably be reached then on the future of world championships, he said. Mr Kiyokawa said there was a great need to have these championships every two years between the fouryearly Olympic Games. The cost of running the championships would be extensive and members may decide to have zonal preliminaries first

Another plan which is still at the discussion stage is that of forming a South Pacific swimming federation.
