Difficulties At Fires
Over-storage led to untidy housekeeping which had a big influence on the way fires developed and the way a fire, once it had developed, could be brought under control, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) said yesterday. Firemen were hampered enough by smoke and heat without also being hampered by extraneous matter lying around, he said.
Mr Osmond appealed to all property owners to rid their premises of all unwanted waste and to ensure that they maintained a good housekeeping standard.
The way in which stock and other equipment was stored had a big bearing on just how successfully firemen could be in their fire fighting. Sufficient room should be left about stock stacks or shelving to allow a possible fire to be got at.
