Interest In Piano Sections

“I must congratulate the Christchurch Competitions Society for including piano duo sections in the competitions," said the piano and violin judge (Mr K. R. Newson) after the third day of the competitions yesterday. “This is the first time I have judged duos,” said Mr Newson who is judging his twenty-fifth festival. “The standard was excellent and duo playing was very good training. A balance of tone was needed between the two pianos and the two performers’ minds must think as one,” he said.

The standard of sight reading was better than usual in all classes, said Mr Newson. “The adults did better than expected and the three artists were very evenly matched. This was unusual as there was usually a discrepancy between competitors in these classes.”

Mr Newson described the performance of Mark Seeker in the under 12 violin solo section as “outstandingly brilliant." Mark Seeker has already won the 10 and under 12 piano solo test, the 10 and under 12 piano solo own selection, the under 12 society scholarship for piano solo and the under 13 National Anthem piano solo. The standard could not have been higher in the 12 and under 14 piano solo section, said Mr Newson. "Of the 19 competitors, there was not a weak one in the class.”

A very large crowd attended last evening’s piano competitions.

Competitors’ timing in the national dancing was very good,

said the judge (Mrs B. Broadbelt, Hamilton). This was possibly because they had had more practise with a piper and there were some good pipers in Christchurch.

Mrs Broadbelt said she was impressed with the under eight sword dance class.

The first section of the £lOO Beryl D. Gough Aria contest was held last evening. Competitors had to sing an aria from an oratorio. The second section, an aria from grand opera will be judged this evening. The final will be held in the Scottish Society Hall on Thursday evening. Yesterday’s results were:— Plano
