N.Z. And Neighbours Theme Of Conference
New Zealanders and their neighbours in the south-west Pacific will be the theme of the fifth New Zealand geographical conference in Auckland in August. Papers will cover the distribution of Cook Islanders in Auckland, the pattern of settlement and economic absorption of Jugoslav immigrants, New Zealand’s trade relations with its Pacific neighbours, economic aspects of slums, and four papers on planning in Auckland city. A symposium on conservation is being organised in conjunction with the Auckland University Geographical Association, the Auckland University Field Club, and the Auckland University Underwater Club. It will cover biotic resources, soil and water and forest and range management One excursion will examine developments in the western
and northern suburbs of Auckland and will include a visit to Muriwai. Another excursion will provide a general picture of the South Auckland area down to the Hauraki lowlands, both in physical background and historical development
Another group will spend half a day looking at Auckland’s industrial development A tour of the city is also planned to show major changes resulttag from Auckland’s rapid growth. A weekend excursion to Northland is included in the programme. A lecture will be given during the conference by Professor C. Kidson, of the University College of Aberystwyth, Wales, who will be visittag professor at Canterbury University this winter. A former director of nature conservancy in Britain, he will speak on conservation measures.
