THE NEW CHIEF RABBI OF BRITAIN, the Very Rev. Dr Immanuel Jakobovits, at St. John’s Wood Synagogue, London, just before his installation. He told the congregation of nearly 2000, and thousands more who watched the ceremony on closed-circuit television in Manchester, Glasgow, and Cardiff, that he would move with caution and prudence in the uncharted territory of inter-faith understanding. He also offered friendly words to Jews who are out of step with Orthodox Jewry. Dr Jakobovits was formerly rabbi of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, New York.
