Helicopter Hunting

Up to 1000 deer carcases are being brought out of South Island bush by helicopters. Mr J. W. Reid, general manager of Helicopters (N.Z.), Ltd., said in Auckland that nine helicopters were involved every day in the hunting of deer. Though 1000 careases represented a peak day, he had frequently seen 700 brought in. There were plenty of animals still (the Forest Service estimated deer numbers at three million to eight million), but the profit margin in helicopter hunting was slender, he said.
