Den Demolished
The last of the once notorious Chinese opium dens in Haining street, Wellington, has been demolished. The street was once known as Chinatown because of the many Chinese who occupied its ramshackle buildings. The old house had heavily barred windows. Entry to the den on the upper floor could be obtained only through a hinged trapdoor, and a rear door was encased in 16-gauge steel. The house was raided by 30 policemen about seven yean ago. The building was bought in November by a firm of plumbers’ merchants.
