To Seek Job

Asked yesterday what he was going to do in his retirement, the Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L. Spencer), who will retire next week, promptly replied: “I shall be getting another job.” He said he did not yet know what the job would be. He was not considering going on a trip overseas. "I have visited quite a few countries in recent years,” he said. “I am fit, want another job, and hope to fill the need as soon as possible.” Mr Spencer will be 62 next month. Blood From Ham The office of the North Canterbury Blood Transfusion Service will be closed next Wednesday and Thursday, when its mobile unit will visit Ham to obtain blood donations from students and staff. This will be the first visit to Ham. A two-day visit was paid to the city section of the University of Canterbury in September of last year, when 224 donations were received. Expert Not Wanted A competition among children should be run for the best design and lay-out for the school grounds, rather than employ a landscape architect, said Dr. H. Smith, at a meeting of the Lincoln High School board of governors this week. Disagreeing, Mr A. T. G. McArthur said that, just as one did not employ unqualified persons to study microbiology, so one did not employ unqualified persons to advise on landscape design. The chairman (Mr J. U. Barclay) said he did not hold with landscape architects, after one job he had seen. Mr McArthur replied that it was dangerous to generalise from one example. The board decided not to employ a landscape gardener. Hook Found A Hamilton fish retailer, Mr V. J. Borich, was filleting a snapper this week when he found a Japanese fish hook embedded in its mouth. “I’ve found plenty of common old Kiwi ones but never a Japanese,” he said. “I think the fisherman either got the fish from the Japanese or netted it when he trawled through some Japanese set lines.” The fish came from Tauranga.— (P.A.). Decimal Stamps The Cook Islands had issued seven stamps, overprinted with decimal currency equivalents, three months before the currency change. The stamps had been released to help Islanders recognise the corresponding cent and pence values, said the Ministry of Posts. Decimal values have not obliterated the pence rates. Both show clearly. The date of issue was April 3. -(PA.) Fishing Rivers The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society reported yesterday that only the Waiau and Selwyn rivers were clear and fishable at 9 a.m. The Hurunui river was slightly discoloured, the Waimakariri slightly discoloured but clearing, the Rakaia was dirty and unfishable, the Ashburton was dirty, and the Rangitata was discoloured.
