Sandflies

Sir,—A £3O million tourist development scheme may sound good business to the Government and Tourist Association but—let us face it —it can be little more than a pipe-dream so long as these august bodies choose to ignore the ravages of that most voracious and tenacious of all pests, the sandfly. Granted that New Zealand may be blessed with incomparable beauty, but it is sobering to remember that it has also been likened to a veritable hell by many returning tourists who have ventured into the bush or West Coast without warning or adequate protection. The pundits claim that China has abolished the house fly, and Europe the mosquito.. Would it not be more prudent to declare war on sandflies before building five-star hotels for tortured tourists who, after returning from a New Zealand holiday, have to recuperate in hospital?— Yours, etc., C. K. ATKINSON. March 15, 1967.
