ACADEMIC MASS

The Academic Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 7 pan. in the Roman Catholic Cathedral.

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) will concelebrate the Mass with four graduate priests—Rev. G. McGinty, S.J., rector of Holy Name Seminary; Rev. G. Daly, parish priest of Mairehau; Rev. L. J. Evatt, SM, rector of St Bede’s College; and Rev. F. Burning, SM., rector of Rochester Halt

Dr. Basil Meeking will be the occasional preacher, the title of his discourse being “The Distant God.” Dr. Meeking is a leading ecumenist among the Roman Catholic clergy, having done doctoral work overseas on ecumenical theory and practice. The 31 Roman Catholic seminarians who are doing full-time study at Canterbury University this year will lead the procession. They will also lead the congregational singing, which will be given a Canterbury flavour by the fact that the processional hymn, based on the episcopal motto of Bishop Ashby, “His Light Our Way," is the work of Professor Vernon Griffiths, while the other hymns will be sung to arrangements by Professor J. Ritchie.

Leading members of the academic and administrative staff of the university and of Christchurch Teachers’ College are expected to be present.
