“N.Z. Integrity At Stake”

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March 9.

The Government did not recognise that New Zealand’s integrity as an independent nation was at stake because overseas monopolies were taking over, said Mr W. Martin, president of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union, at a public meeting called by the union in Auckland tonight to present a case for a Stateowned shipping line.

As an example, he said, the P. and O. shipping line took over one of the New Zealand companies and gradually foreclosed runs to America and Australia.

Three years ago the union decided to piess for a Slueowned line “We sincerely believe that it will help to solve the economic ills that our country is going through at the moment," he said. “If we can get about six or seven ships and gradually expand the fleet, we will prove to outsiders that we can

operate efficiently and In competition and at the same time keep a brake on the ever hungry monopolies, who are helping to cripple the econmy of New Zealand.
