Barracking Encouraged
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copgright) NEW YORK.
In a series of Davis Cup-style tennis matches to be played this week before the second annual Vanderbilt indoor international in New York the spectators will be encouraged to be vociferous. “We will try to get the gallery to boo, cheer, whistle or groan any time it feels like it,” said Mr G. Gazdag, the Director of the Vanderbilt Athletic Club.
“It’s an experiment to determine the reaction of the players. We go back to the old tennis manners for the regular singles tournament.”
The experiment, however, is believed likely to flop, for tennis fans have been disciplined from time immemorial to keep their mouths shut on pain of the severest penalty from the umpire.
