Clark Tasman Champion
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. J. Clark clinched his second Tasman series with his run-away win in the International Cup at Sandown on Sunday. Clark finished more than 50 seconds ahead of the New South Wales driver, L. Geoghegan, with the Australian international F. Gardner
about 400 yards behind in third place. Clark, winner of the 1965 Tasman championship, now has an unbeatable lead in this year’s series with one race to be decided. This will be held in Tasmania next week. J. Brabham, striving for his first win in the current championship, was forced out in the ninth lap of the 52-lap race with electrical trouble. Brabham at the time was leading from Scotland’s J. Stewart.
Two laps later Stewart retired with a broken gearbox.
Brabham’s team-mate D. Hulme led the race for the next 12 laps until he was forced out with gearbox trouble. Clark went to the lead in the twenty-third lap and steadily pulh 1 away. The fastest lap in the race was shared by Brabham and Stewart who recorded Imin 6.9 sec—equal to about 103 m.p.h. But in the 10-lap racing cars scratch race earlier in the day, Brabham’s fastest lap was Imin s.7sec—--105.64 m.p.h.
