CENTRAL WINS OUTRIGHT

(New Zealand Press Association)

WANGANUI.

Central Districts scored a resounding 213run outright victory over the Rothmans New Zealand under-23 cricket side at Cook’s Gardens yesterday.

It took Central only 100 minutes yesterday morning to polish off the remaining six under-23 batsmen for victory.

The under-23 team finished with 126 in the second innings, chasing a target of 340 runs for victory. A mixture of pace and spin bowling proved too much for the under-23 side, which never really looked like scoring the required runs. Central now move on to Palmerston North for the match against the Australians, starting this morning and, judging on Wanganui form, the Plunket Shield champions have a good chance of beating the tourists.. The young Northern Districts batsman E. Thomas was the first victim of the morning, spooning up an easy catch to V. Pollard off the bowling of B. Andrews after 20 minutes of play.

The Canterbury spin bowler J. Mclntyre batted freely for his 19 in almost even time but his aggressive batting finally provided his downfall, when G. Douglas held a high catch to give Pollard his second wicket of the innings. B. Isherwood, the Canterbury wicket-keeper, added only four runs to his overnight score before being trapped l.b.w. by Andrews. The under-23 vice captain, R. Collinge, fell victim to Central Districts keeper R. Schofield for the second time in the match when he gave Schofield a catch off the bowling of Pollard.

Solid batting from tailenders M. Coles and D. Hadlee enabled the under-23 side to top 100, both batsmen relishing the slow Central attack.

Total .126 Fall of wickets: One for 2. two for 7, three for 23, four for 38. five for 52. six for 73, seven for 78, eight for 78, nine for 107, 10 for 126.
