Waimairi County Council

Sir. —The officers of the Waimairi County Council ought to be ashamed of themselves for burning off the stubble of the barley crop in the conditions of the present hot spell. Apart from the loss of nutrient value to the soil, the burning was a distinct fire hazard. There could have been another Hobart on a small scale. As long as the county continues t« carry out rural actions in an urban area, then there will be a case for amalgamation with the city.—Yours, etc., CLYDE ROAD. February 17, 1967. [The chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr D. B. Rich) replies: “The barley stubble on the University of Canterbury property at Clyde road was burnt off by the university authorities, who first

obtained the permission of this council and the Metropolitan Fire Board. It was a controlled burning, and the ground was ploughed immediately afterwards, thereby not causing any loss of nutrient value in the soil, and this is an accepted method adopted nowadays."]
