Hawarden
Sir, —A recent report stated that a large poultry unit is to be built in the Peaks area in the Hawarden district. This would seem to be a very good thing. However, it appears that several houses will be built in this remote area also. The Waipara County Council has recently completed an expensive water and sewerage scheme for Hawar-den-Waikari. Has it allowed permits for houses to be built miles from anywhere while it has cheap land available for housing in Hawarden itself? Goods and services, medical treatment, school transport and social and religious amenities will have to be considered to suit this scheme. Grave social problems can arise when town dwellers, e.g., poultry workers and their wives, are asked to live far from normal community life. It may be necessary for the work of the unit to have some houses, but it would be better to consider every aspect before such a large venture is allowed to continue, without advanced planning, or the piecemeal development so evident in the country at present, will increase and make life even more dfficult for everyone.—Yours, etc., E. H.
