Lifeboat Damaged

The Sumner lifeboat's rudder was badly damaged when a call to a stranded jet boat in the Estuary was received on Friday, and will have to be replaced at a cost of about £5O. When the call was received and the boat launched there was an hour and a half to go to low tide, but the lifeboat grounded. On its return the crew had to wait for the tide to rise to get into the shed.

At the time the Lifeboat Institution had been forced to accept a launching site about which it was not happy the City Council guaranteed four feet of water at all times, the secretary (Mr W. J. Baguley) said yesterday. The institution wanted a site 100 yards further on where there was 10 feet of water all the time, Mr Baguley said. It was still awaiting a visit by a council engineer promised last June. On Friday the crew was able to get the boat out to the call in rpite of the damaged rudder.
