CHIEF OF CITY POLICE DIES
Chief Superintendent George Walter Alty, oflicer-in-charge of the Christchurch police district, died in the Oamaru Hospital yesterday. He was 58. Mr Alty spent his youth in the Waimate district and joined the police on May 18, 1933. After completing a training course in Wellington he was posted to Christchurch. In June, 1940, he was appointed a detective and was promoted to detective sergeant in August, 1946. Soon after becoming a senior detective in July, 1955, Mr Alty was transferred to the Dunedin C. 1.8. He was appointed a detective inspector in April, 1960, and detective chief inspector in February, 1962. In November, 1962, he was promoted detective superintendent and was placed in charge of the Dunedin C. 1.8. After being in charge of the Dunedin police district for a short time Mr Alty was appointed chief superintendent in August, 1964, and transferred to Christchurch. Mr Alty has two brothers who are senior police officers. One is Superintendent J. H. Alty, who is m charge of the Invercargill police district, and the other is Superintendent B. R. Alty, who controls the Rotorua police district. One of his sons, Senior-Ser-geant P. J. Alty, is stationed at Dunedin. Another son, Mr E. T. Alty, recently qualified as a solicitor at Dunedin. His father had attended his admission to the bar a short time before he was taken ill. Mr Alty is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
Novelist’s Mother Dies.—* Mrs Margaret Ashton-Warner, mother of the New Zealand novelist, Sylvia Ashton-Warn-er (Mrs K. p. Henderson, of Tauranga) died yesterday at Christ's Hospital, Selwyn Village. She was 91.—(P.A.)
