CROQUET FINAL

Mrs Todd Wins

Mrs E. M. Todd (St. James Park) beat F. W. Gurnsey (Fnedalton Park), 26-21, in a gruelling game that concluded the English silver and bronze medal croquet tournament in Christchurch yesterday. The final began very slowly, both players failing to establish a break.

Gurnsey hit some splendid long shots, but lost the innings by going out of bounds. Mrs Todd set out a break, but lost it by failing at the third hoop.

Gurnsey hit in, and made a small break to 4-back. Mrs Todd then hit in a long shot, and held control of the game for some time. She held a two-point lead before Gurnsey hit a long shot, and reversed the score.

After more in-and-out play, Mrs Todd gained the innings when Gurnsey failed at penultimate. From this, she carried her clip from 3-back to the peg. Gurnsey missed the lift shot, and Mrs Todd, with a splendid long peg-out, won the game. Gurnsey, the section four winner, had earlier beaten Mrs V. Whitcombe (United), the section two winner, by 26-10 in a section play-off.
