Repairs To Rangitoto
The New Zealand Shipping Company’s passenger liner and flag ship Rangitoto, at present in Lyttelton’s inner harbour loading refrigerated and general cargo for London, has been delayed because of engine repairs. The Rangitoto had engine trouble on the outward voyage, and, according to the New Zealand Shipping Company, the 21,809-ton motor vessel will now leave Auckland for Britain on March 23, instead of leaving Wellington on March 15, as planned.
She would thus be about eight days late at ports on the way back, a company spokesman said yesterday. The Rangitoto arrived at Cashin Quay from Auckland last Monday. The nature of the repairs has not been disclosed, but the Rangitoto is not expected to leave Lyttelton for Auckland before March 10.
The Lyttelton Harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) said he would not allow the Rangitoto to be repaired at Cashin Quay. It had to be done at an inner-harbour berth, he said. The Rangitoto would now arrive in Britain on April 29 and passengers who had booked were being advised the company spokesman said.
