Shark Scare At Surfing Titles

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN.

A shark scare heightened tension when the New Zealand surf life-saving championships began at Warrington Beach yesterday. It proved a false alarm.

Two fins were seen only a short distance from the beach early in the day’s programme. But an inspection revealed nothing more distracting than several fish than are commonly seen around Dunedin beaches. Heats only were held in both men’s and women’s events. The only result which created any real excitement was the win of N. Penwarden (Maranul) over M. Harvey

(Lyall Bay) in the third heat lof the senior beltman’s race. Both members of the New I Zealand surf team, they swam stroke for stroke, and Penwarden took the event by 2sec.

The title-holder, R. Harker (Red Beach) recorded the fastest time in the eight heats. In the following results the abbreviations used are: L B Lyall Bay; W„ West Shore; R„ Rarangl; E.U., Eastern United; R. 8..
