Challenge To Heath

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, February 24.

A former war-time R.A.F. pilot has emerged as a new contender for the leadership of Britain’s Conservative Party.

He is Mr Anthony Barber, 46, who has been chosen by the present leader, Mr Edward Heath, as a “team manager” or "Chief of Staff” to help “ginger-up” the party’s activities in opposition to the governing Labour Party. Mr Heath’s leadership has been under close scrutiny by some of his party members and political observers after more than a year of spearheading the Conservative attack day-by-day on the Government in the House of Commons.
