SYDNEY, Feb. 24.
A girl, aged 16, broke down and wept in the Central Criminal Courttoday when sentenced to two years’ gaol for the manslaughter of a man who allegedly kidnapped and raped her.
In passing sentence. Mr Justice R. L. Taylor said there seemed to be “a callous indifference on the part of some young people to inflicting pain on others.” The Judge said that although the girl’s case contained many extenuating cir-
cumstances, he could not overlook a vital part of punishment—the deterrent to others. Before the Court for sentence was Dorothy May Vairy, a typist A jury yesterday found her guilty of the manslaughter at Tamworth on July 30 last year of Noel John Gill, 37. The jury found her not guilty of the murder of Gill. The Crown alleged that the girl shot Gill through the head as he was lying on a mattress at a camp in bush near Tamworth.
The girl told the jury that Gill had kidnapped, assaulted, whipped and raped her.
