Fish Meal In Australia
Australia relies heavily on imports for its supplies of fish meal, of which only about 1083 tons were produced in 1964-65. The meal was formerly used as a fertiliser, but today is regarded as a high quality ingredient of animal food. Research has shown that it has advantages over other protein meals for promoting rapid growth in pigs and poultry and has an important vitamin content.
A report by the Fisheries Branch of the Department of Primary Industry states that Australia imported 24,300,000 lb of fish meal in 1964-65, South Africa being the main supplier. It was expected that the demand would continue to increase to meet the needs of the growing broiler industry, but unless domestic production increased significantly, most of the requirements would continue to be met by imports.
