More Room Planned For Radiotherapy
The Health Department had approved the preparation of working drawings for alterations to the Christchurch Hospital’s radiotherapy department, it was reported to yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
The manufacturer of the new linear accelerator for cancer treatment has been asked to indicate whether the machine should be stored, or whether it could delay delivery, as accommodation will
not be ready for at least another year. The chairman (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) said the purchase of the accelerator would entail considerable building alterations in the radiotherapy department. Ward Six would be demolished, and in its place there would be additional clinics, treatment areas and offices.
Provision was also being made to house oxygen barotherapy equipment. The board’s deputy chairman (Mr L. A. Bennett) said he had recently looked at the construction of a radiotherapy department in Japan, and he was most pleased with the boards’ design. The great advantage of modern planning was that the patient did not feeel shut in while undergoing treatment. There was a feeling of spaciousness which helped to remove the alarm a patient felt when alone.
